Chelsea are reportedly among several clubs monitoring RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Netherlands international, 21, rejoined Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain for €50 million in January following a successful loan spell. However, he is widely expected to depart the Red Bull Arena once the 2024-25 season concludes.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, a move for Simons is a “concrete and strong possibility,” with a price tag of approximately €70-75 million. Premier League giants Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United are all said to be well-informed about his situation as they weigh up potential bids.
Simons, who spent nearly a decade at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy before joining PSG in 2019, reportedly harbors a “dream” of returning to the Catalan club. However, financial constraints and an already well-stocked attacking lineup under new manager Hansi Flick make a move to England the more realistic option.
Although Simons is versatile enough to play as a left winger, he thrives in an attacking midfield role. This could present a challenge at Chelsea, where Cole Palmer is firmly established as the club’s first-choice No.10. Additionally, the arrivals of promising South American talents Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez in July could create further competition for places.
Manchester United, on the other hand, could offer a clearer path to regular football. The uncertain futures of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony leave the Red Devils in need of attacking reinforcements, while club captain Bruno Fernandes has also been linked with a potential exit amid interest from Real Madrid.
United’s pursuit of Simons could intensify under incoming manager Ruben Amorim, who is reportedly keen to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season. Should Fernandes depart, Simons would be a natural replacement for the Portuguese playmaker.
With multiple Premier League clubs in the race and a Barcelona return unlikely, Simons’ future remains a key talking point as the summer window approaches. Where he lands could hinge on financial negotiations and squad dynamics at his prospective new club.
