Chelsea Ready to Send Marc Guiu on Loan as Sunderland Push for Deal Before Season Opener

Marc Guiu

Marc Guiu is expected to leave Chelsea this summer, with newly-promoted Sunderland now leading the race to sign the 19-year-old striker on loan. The Championship runners-up are eager to add firepower ahead of their Premier League return, and Chelsea see regular minutes elsewhere as key to Guiu’s development.

Guiu Falls Behind as Chelsea Restructure Attack

After joining from Barcelona for £5 million last summer, Guiu made just 16 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions. Despite a standout hat-trick against Shamrock Rovers in the UEFA Conference League, he was largely a backup option.

This summer, Chelsea have overhauled their attacking options, signing Joao Pedro from Brighton and Liam Delap from Ipswich in deals worth a combined £90 million. With Nicolas Jackson staying put, manager Enzo Maresca now has three first-team strikers ahead of Guiu, who doesn’t currently fit into the Blues’ plans for the 2025/26 season.

Sunderland and Ipswich Express Interest

Both Sunderland and Ipswich Town have shown interest in Guiu, but Sunderland have progressed to active negotiations. The Black Cats have already made seven summer signings—including former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka—and see Guiu as a potential impact player in the top flight.

Chelsea reportedly remain confident in the Spaniard’s long-term potential, and a loan deal is seen as a way to gain senior-level experience without sacrificing future value.

Chelsea’s Busy Summer Window

Guiu would become Chelsea’s 10th outgoing player this summer if the deal is completed. While most have been permanent exits, the Blues have also arranged several strategic loans, including Kendry Paez and Mamadou Sarr’s expected moves to Strasbourg.

Loan Move Seen as Win-Win

While Guiu is not part of Chelsea’s immediate first-team plans, the club still values his potential. A Premier League loan move to Sunderland could offer him critical playing time, benefitting both his development and Chelsea’s future options.
