Berta’s First Big Move: Arsenal Eye €100m Gyökeres as No.9 Solution

Newly appointed sporting director Andrea Berta has wasted no time making his mark at Arsenal, identifying key transfer targets ahead of the 2025/26 season. Among them is Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres, who has now emerged as Berta’s top choice to lead the Gunners’ frontline next season, according to reports from GMS.

Berta, who joined the North London club just last week, has also prioritised Athletic Club winger Nico Williams for a potential move to bolster the flanks. However, it’s the pursuit of Gyökeres that is generating the most intrigue, particularly given Arsenal’s long-standing interest in the Swedish international.

Gyökeres, 26, has been on Mikel Arteta’s radar for over a year, but a deal has yet to materialise. With the striker now reportedly open to a move away from Sporting, Arsenal could be poised to strike. Despite the €100 million release clause in his contract, negotiations could see the Portuguese side accept an offer closer to €70 million.

The Swedish forward’s form this season has been nothing short of sensational, registering 42 goals in as many appearances across all competitions — a prolific return that has cemented his status as one of Europe’s most in-demand strikers.

While Arsenal have also been linked with Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, the financial demands for his services appear to be beyond reach. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško remains another viable option under consideration, but Gyökeres is now firmly at the top of the Gunners’ wishlist.

In a boost for Arsenal, Manchester United — previously seen as a strong contender for Gyökeres — are reportedly cooling their interest. The Old Trafford outfit is now focusing on alternative targets, including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Ipswich Town’s rising star Liam Delap. This shift removes a major obstacle in Arsenal’s pursuit and increases their chances of landing the prolific Swede.

As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on the Emirates to see if Berta can deliver Gyökeres and add a clinical edge to Arteta’s evolving project.
